Deep Brain Stimulation for Fibromyalgia?

The medical community is beginning to latch on to a new treatment for depression called vagus nerve stimulation. St. Jude Medical and Mayo Clinic have dedicated web pages on the procedure. In late 2007, an article was printed in Science Daily which explains how the brain and the immune system are interconnected through the vagus nerve. "It turns out that the brain talks directly to the immune system, sending commands that control the body's inflammatory response to infection and autoimmune diseases." Your immune system is controlled by a nerve call the vagus nerve. And doctors are activating this nerve through the "vagus nerve stim" procedure. Mostly they are treating depression, but are studying its use for other health conditions.

Diane Krause, MD, PhD, from Yale University discovered that our own innate adult stem cells (cells that can turn into any cell in the body from our bone marrow) could be transformed into liver, bowel, lung, and skin cells.
This breakthrough means that we have the power to create new cells and renew our own organs and tissues at any age. Well, it happens to be that stem cells are also controlled by the vagus nerve. So one potential new avenue for healing lies in stimulating the vagus nerve which activates your stem cells to regenerate and renew your tissues and organs. If this power can be harnessed through appropriate vagus nerve stimulation, then it will be a huge breakthrough in healing. It could actually make stem cell transplants obsolete before that procedure is ever fully allowed!

So the vagus nerve stimulation procedure currently involves a small implant similar to a pacemaker, and once it is programmed, there is nothing else to do as it works automatically. The longer the patient receives stimulation, the better the results. Do you want to know what else stimulates the vagus nerve? Meditation. Relaxation --a state of calm, peace, and stillness -- can activate the vagus nerve. It's true. By creating positive brain states -- as meditation masters have done for centuries -- you can switch on the vagus nerve and control inflammation. Or you can try the implant. Either way, the future of medicine is very promising and research is beginning to show that the brain and the mind play a huge role in healing.

Personally, I've been using Holosync to reach meditative healing states and never knew the impact it was having on my vagus nerve and immune system! What I understood was that Holosync soundtracks give the brain a stimulus which causes the creation of new neural connections between the left and right hemisphere of the brain. This process produces a very pleasurable meditative experience, plus all kinds of deep and positive changes in emotional health. Many times I fell asleep while listening, and what a bonus to still get the effects of meditating! In the beginning, I noticed some upheaval emotionally and was a little doubtful the process would work. But I have stuck with it for 4 years, and I look back and marvel at the positive changes that have taken place.

Vagus nerve stimulation is the only FDA approved long term treatment option for severe depression. It completely changed my life and inspired me to write the book:

Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression

I am so very grateful for this wonderful medical breakthrough treatment for depression.
